Do We Really Need a Buzz? Our Take on the New Wave of ‘Alcohol-Free Buzz’ Drinks

When I first gave up drinking, I was desperately searching for a way to fill the gap that alcohol left behind. The rituals, the relaxation, and yes, that buzz—it felt like something I couldn’t live without. If someone had handed me a drink that promised to give me a buzz without the downsides of alcohol, I would have jumped at it.

But now? After years of embracing an alcohol-free lifestyle, the thought of chasing that buzz again feels like a step backward. Let me explain why.

Back When I Craved the Buzz

In those early days of going alcohol-free, I was still holding onto the idea that I needed something external to unwind, celebrate, or feel connected in social situations. The buzz wasn’t just a feeling—it was a habit, a ritual, and sometimes even a crutch. If these so-called "buzz drinks" had been available back then, I have no doubt I’d have been their biggest fan.

Back then, I would have wanted something that made me feel like I was still part of the crowd, something to take the edge off, without the headaches, bad decisions, or regret the next morning. These new products—crafted to mimic alcohol’s effects without the toxicity—promise just that.

What Are These ‘Buzz Drinks’?

Let’s break it down. The market for alcohol-free buzz alternatives is booming, and these are some of the key players:

  • Sentia: A botanical spirit designed to enhance GABA activity in your brain, promoting relaxation and a slight euphoria.

  • Kin Euphorics: Blends of adaptogens and nootropics intended to elevate mood and boost social confidence.

  • Kava-Based Drinks: Rooted in traditional Pacific Island rituals, kava is known for its calming, stress-relieving effects.

  • Ketone Drinks: Products like Ketone Aid use ketones to mimic some of alcohol’s relaxing effects without intoxicating you.

These drinks claim to provide the social ease and relaxation of alcohol without the downsides—no hangovers, no impaired judgment, and no toxicity. Sounds like a dream, right?

Why These Drinks Might Be Good

For someone sober-curious or just starting to explore life without alcohol, these drinks could be a helpful bridge:

  • Social Pressure: They offer an alternative for those who feel left out or judged when everyone else has a drink in hand.

  • Relaxation: The ingredients in these drinks (like GABA or kava) can help reduce stress, similar to what alcohol might do.

  • Healthier Alternative: They avoid the toxic effects of alcohol, making them a safer option for anyone cutting back.

Why These Drinks Might Be Bad

But here’s where I start to question their place in my own alcohol-free journey.

  1. Do We Really Need Another Crutch? A huge part of my sobriety journey has been learning to live without craving a buzz—without feeling like I need something external to create joy, relaxation, or connection. Running gives me that buzz naturally, and it’s something I create within myself.

  2. Reinforcing Old Patterns Even if the substance is different, relying on a drink to "take the edge off" feels eerily similar to the habits I worked so hard to break. Would I start counting down the hours until I could have my "buzz drink"? That feels too much like my old life with alcohol.

  3. Triggers for Some For those recovering from alcohol addiction, these drinks could be a slippery slope. The ritual of sipping something that mimics alcohol’s effects might reignite cravings or unhealthy associations.

  4. Freedom Comes from Letting Go One of the greatest gifts of sobriety is the freedom from needing anything at all. I no longer look for a buzz at the end of the day—I find joy in my runs, in my kids, and in simply being present. For me, introducing a product that creates a "buzz" feels like shackling myself to something I’ve worked hard to let go of.

Conclusion: Finding Your Own Buzz

I can see why these drinks appeal to some people, especially those early in their alcohol-free journey. But for me, they don’t align with the life I’ve built. Sobriety isn’t just about removing alcohol—it’s about learning to live fully without needing a crutch.

Instead of looking for a buzz in a bottle, I’ve learned to create it myself. A hard run on the trails, a belly laugh with friends, or the simple peace of a hangover-free morning—those are the highs I live for now.

So, if you’re alcohol-free and loving it, I’ll leave you with this question: Do you really need a buzz to feel alive? Or is the real buzz waiting for you in the clarity, freedom, and joy of a life where you don’t need anything but yourself?

What do you think? Let’s keep the conversation going—I’d love to hear your thoughts!
