Rediscovering What It Means to Run Naked: Our Journey So Far

When we launched Run Naked several months ago, our mission was simple: to bring people together who wanted to embrace an alcohol-free lifestyle while exploring the joy and challenge of running. Now, after countless conversations with amazing people and hearing inspiring stories from our community, we've come to some important realisations. Our goal remains the same, but our vision has grown stronger. We want to create the best alcohol-free community in Australia—a place that highlights to those struggling with booze just how amazing life can be without it.

From Reluctance to Realisation

Adam and I, Jenny, didn’t jump into this Alcohol-Free journey eagerly; in fact, we both gave up drinking reluctantly. Like many Australians, we embraced the culture of socialising with a drink in hand (a boozy one)—it was just what you did. It was woven into the fabric of our lives, and the thought of leaving it behind felt like we’d be giving up more than just alcohol. We feared we’d miss out on the fun, that life would lose its vibrancy and never be as good again.

For Adam, giving up drinking wasn’t a choice but a necessity; his relationships were suffering, and something had to change. As for me, my anxiety around drinking had become overwhelming, and I knew deep down that I needed to make a change. It felt like we were stepping away from something essential, not just giving up a habit, but a part of who we were.

Life on the Other Side

Little did we know that life on the other side of the fence was going to serve up such wonders. Once we moved past the initial discomfort and embraced our alcohol-free lives, we found that the world opened up in ways we hadn’t expected. Our relationships improved, our mornings were clearer, and our sense of achievement from running replaced the temporary highs of drinking.

But the most surprising part? We didn’t feel as disconnected from Australian culture as we thought we would. In fact, we realised that you could still love everything that Aussie life has to offer without the alcohol. There’s no rule that says you can’t enjoy a night at the pub or a weekend barbecue without a beer in hand. We’ve learned that life can be just as lively, social, and downright fun without alcohol, and we’ve seen firsthand the incredible things you can accomplish when you wake up fresh and ready to take on the day.

Building a Community for Everyone

Run Naked was born out of a desire to offer something different. We wanted to create a space for people who love Australia and its social culture, just with the option to stay alcohol-free and add a little running into the mix. We recognise that lots of people drink and probably always will, and that’s absolutely fine. Everyone should feel happy with their own choices.

But for those who’ve found that drinking isn’t adding to their lives—or worse, is taking something away—we wanted to offer a way to focus on something positive, without feeling alienated from the culture they love. You don’t have to be embarrassed or feel awkward in a social setting just because you’re not drinking. We believe that we can all blend together—beers in hand, or not—and still wake up fresh in the morning, proud of what we’re achieving.

How Good Life Can Be

We’ve spoken to so many people who thought alcohol was the glue that held their social lives together, only to find that when they let it go, they discovered a new sense of freedom and fulfilment. We’ve been lucky enough to hear stories of first-time runners smashing their goals, people forming meaningful friendships, and many finding a new appreciation for weekends without hangovers.

That’s why we’re more committed than ever to building the best alcohol-free community in Australia—a place where people who are struggling with booze can see just how epic life can be without it. Whether it’s through running, connecting with others who understand, or just enjoying the simple pleasure of feeling good, we’re here to support you.
